About Us
Age Concern Reading was established in 1976 to provide support and information to older people in the Reading Area. Since that time, many thousands of older people have benefited from its services.
There has been an Age Concern Reading Office and Shop at 302 Oxford Road since 1983.
In 2007, the management of the Age Concern Shop in the Oxford Road was taken up by Age Concern Retail (now AgeUK Trading). Age Concern Reading continues to benefit from the profits of this shop and also from the Age Concern shop in Caversham.
Age Concern Reading is managed by a board of trustees. We currently have a staff of 18 paid workers and around 40 volunteers. Age Concern Reading is a member of the Age Concern Federation and has achieved the Age Concern "Quality Counts" standard.
Age Concern nationally is the UK's largest organisation working for and with older people to enable them to make more of life. In England, it is a federation of over 400 independent charities which share the same name, values and standards. Age Concern believes that ageing is a normal part of life, and that later life should be fulfilling, enjoyable and productive. Age Concern enables older people by providing services and grants, researching their needs and opinions, influencing government and media, and through other innovative and dynamic projects.
