Looking forward – remembering the past
Are you 65+ and a former carer, or just someone who enjoys company?
Falls remain a major cause of injury and death amongst the over 70s and account for more than 50 per cent of hospital admissions for accidental injury. Evidence shows that specific programmes for improving strength and balance can reduce the risk of falls by as much as 55 per cent. However, with one in five older people admitting that they cannot remember the last time they did any exercise, Age UK is calling for more work to be done.
The abolition of forced retirement is not only a ‘huge victory’ for workers at risk of being forced out of their jobs because of their age, but is also a ‘landmark’ for the UK society at large, as older workers, the UK economy, public finances and employers will all benefit from this change, says Age UK.

Age Concern Reading are very proud to announce that the profits raised from "Lindsay's Christmas Quiz" eventually totalled £1,829.74.
This money will enable many older people in Reading to enjoy coach trips out at a subsidised cost.
They are seeking someone to assist the chairman by arranging entertainment and organising occasional outings.
ACTION ON ELDER ABUSE, the leading charity fighting elder and adult abuse, has welcomed this morning’s announcement that new legislation will be enacted to put Safeguarding Adults Boards onto a statutory footing. It has also welcomed the establishment of an inter-departmental ministerial group to coordinate strategic planning across Government.
Age Concern Reading has been chosen as one of the three local charities to benefit from the Waitrose Oxford Road Reading “ Community Matters” in December 2009.
Changes to savings allowance
The Govt. calculations assume you earn £2 of income a week for each £1,000 of savings (equiv to 10% interest), but while it used to ignore the first £6,000 of savings, now it'll ignore the first £10,000, so those with bigger savings can still get pension credit.

Age Concern Reading will be holding its Annual General Meeting at The Kennet Room, Civic Centre, Reading on Thursday 8 October at 11 am.
A new monthly group for older carers in the Southcote area of Reading meets for the first time on Thursday 24th September. Meetings will take place at the St Matthews Church Hall, Southcote Lane between 2pm and 4pm.
As a result of extra funding from The Earley Charity, Age Concern Reading will be operating extra toenail cutting sessions at venues around Reading from the beginning of October.
